NEXIUM
- Information
Additional Information
Nexium Description - Why is Nexium prescribed?
The medication Nexium is also available under the generic name Esomeprazole and is prescribed to decrease the amount of acid produced in the stomach. Some of the conditions that use Nexium for treatment include gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and most other conditions which involve excessive stomach acid. Nexium and Esomeprazole are also used to promote healing of damage to the esophagus caused by stomach acid, otherwise known as erosive esophagitis. Nexium may also be prescribed to prevent any gastric ulcers caused by infection or by the use of NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs).
Nexium Indications
Use Nexium as directed by your doctor and make sure to finish your prescribed dosage even if your symptoms get better. You should tell your doctor if you have ever had liver or heart disease before taking Nexium. It is not recommended you take Esomeprazole with other benzimidazole medications such as Albenza or Vermox. You should contact your physician if you plan to take Nexium while taking any of the following drugs: Nizoral, Valium, Lanoxin, Reyataz, Coumadin or any iron supplement such as Feosol, Mol-Iron, Fergon or Femiron. Nexium is in FDA pregnancy category B, which means it should not be harmful to an unborn baby. Check with your doctor if you are or are planning on becoming pregnant.
Nexium Side Effects
Minor Nexium side effects can include constipation, nausea, stomach pain, diarrhea, gas, headache or dry mouth. If you have more serious Nexium side effects including hives, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat, or any difficulty breathing, get emergency medical help. Your pharmacist or health care provider can provide more information about the effects of Nexium or esomeprazole on your body.
