Parnate Description - Why is Parnate prescribed?

The medication Parnate is used to treat depression and is also known by the generic name Tranylcypromine.  Parnate is a MAOI (monoamine oxidase inhibitor) that increases the levels of some chemicals in the brain. It is usually prescribed to patients after other anti-depressants have been tried unsuccessfully to treat their symptoms. However, Parnate is not used to treat bipolar disorder.

If you are or plan on becoming pregnant, tell your doctor; Parnate is in FDA pregnancy category C, which means this medication could be harmful and addictive to an unborn baby. You must not take Parnate while eating foods that are high in tyramine; make sure you research what those are with your physician.

Parnate Side Effects

Minor Parnate side effects include nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, dry mouth, loss of appetite, decreased urination, dizziness, ringing in your ears and/or a restless, weak, or drowsy feeling. More serious Parnate side effects can include fast or pounding heart beats, easy bruising or bleeding, cold, swelling of your ankles or feet, tremors, muscle twitches, vision problems and sensitivity to light. If you experience any parnate side effects, please contact your physician. Make sure you are under a physicians supervision while taking Parnate.
