Paxil Description - Why is Paxil prescribed?
Paxil, which is also sold under the generic name Paroxetine, is used to treat depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), a variety of anxiety disorders, panic disorder or posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Paxil is a SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) that works by restoring the balance of serotonin, a natural substance in the brain, helping to improve some moderate to severe mood problems.
Paxil Indications
Use of antidepressants such as Paxil could increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or actions in patients. Do not use Paxil if you are taking or have taken a MAOI (monoamine oxidase inhibitor) such as phenelzine,selegiline or St. John's wort within the last 14 days. You should also not take Paxil if you are currently taking dexfenfluramine, nefazodone, pimozide, or a serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor such as venlafaxine, sibutramine, thioridazine, or tryptophan. Alert your doctor if you have any history of heart, liver or kidney problems, stomach or bowel bleeding, glaucoma, diabetes, or seizures. Make sure you consult with your physician before taking Paxil as some other medications (such as anticoagulants and diuretics, among others) may interact negatively with Paxil.

There can be minor paxil side effects including loss of appetite; nausea; diarrhea; dizziness; drowsiness; nervousness; stomach upset; trouble concentrating; anxiety; blurred vision; constipation; decreased sexual desire or ability; dry mouth; gas; increased sweating; increased urination and trouble sleeping. More severe paxil side effects can include but are not limited to: chest pain; exaggerated reflexes; irregular heartbeat; fever, chills, or sore throat; loss of coordination; persistent, painful erection; red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin, panic attacks, aggressiveness, impulsiveness, irritability, hostility, restlessness; ringing in the ears; seizures; severe or persistent anxiety or trouble sleeping; significant weight loss; stomach pain; suicidal thoughts or attempts; tremor; unusual bruising or bleeding; vision changes; worsening of depression.
