Celebrex Description - Why is Celebrex prescribed?
Celebrex is also known generically as Celecoxib. Celebrex is a COX-2 inhibitor NSAID. NSAIDs treat the symptoms of inflammation and pain but don't treat the disease that causes those symptoms. Celebrex (Celecoxib) is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, juvenile arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and pain, including menstrual pain. Celebrex is also utilized to decrease the number of polyps (growths) in the rectal area which occur with familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP). Your doctor may determine other conditions for which to prescribe Celebrex.
Celebrex Indications
Celebrex may cause an increase in serious and sometimes fatal risks of heart and blood vessel problems (eg, heart attack, stroke) as well as stomach ulcers and bleeding. If you are an elderly patient, already have or have had any heart problems or have taken Celebrex for a long time, these risks may be increased. It is important that you do not use Celebrex or Celecoxib directly before or after bypass heart surgery. Some medicines may interact with Celebrex, including but not limited to: aspirin, any other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) such as ibuprofen, anticoagulants such as warfarin, Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors such as enalapril, corticosteroids such as prednisone, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as fluoxetine, heparin, Fluconazole, probenecid, Cyclosporine, lithium, methotrexate, quinolones (eg, ciprofloxacin), angiotensin II receptor blockers such as valsartan or diuretics such as furosemide and hydrochlorothiazide.
Celebrex Side Effects
Common side effects of Celebrex include (but are not limited to) nausea, diarrhea, gas, constipation, drowsiness, dizziness, heartburn, headaches, nausea, upset stomach, sore throat or stuffy nose. More severe side effects of Celebrex include (but are not limited to) serious stomach ulcers or bleeding, severe stomach or back pain; black, tarry stools; bloody vomit, unusual weight gain, yellowing of the skin or eyes or any bleeding, bruising and/or swelling. Children who take Celebrex for juvenile rheumatoid arthritis may be more sensitive to the medicines effects, especially with problems associated with blood clots. Celebrex must not be used during the last 3 months of pregnancy as it may cause harm to the fetus. Taking Celebrex in high doses or for a long time increases the risk of these side effects, as does smoking or drinking alcohol. Contact your health care provider or the emergency room immediately if you have any severe symptoms.
