Avelox Description - Why is Avelox prescribed?
Avelox is in a class of drugs called fluoroquinolones. Avelox (also known as moxifloxacin) is an antibiotic utilized to treat bacterial infections. While taking moxifloxacin, you should drink at least eight full glasses of water or other liquid every day.
Avelox Indications
Take Avelox for as many days as it has been prescribed for you even if your symptoms begin to improve. Avelox will not treat the common cold or flu or any viral infections. If you or any member of your family have a heart condition known as long QT syndrome, consult your doctor before taking Avelox. If you are also using a heart rhythm medicine such as quinidine (Cardioquin, Quinidex, Quinaglute), procainamide (Pronestyl, Procan SR), amiodarone (Cordarone, Pacerone), sotalol (Betapace) or others, don't use Avelox.
Some other drugs may make Avelox less effective when taken at the same time. Wait at least 4 hours after or 8 hours before you take Avelox before taking any of the following medications: antacids such as Tums, Rolaids and Maalox that contain magnesium, calcium, or aluminum; the ulcer medicine Carafate (sucralfate); vitamin or mineral supplements containing iron or zinc; didanosine chewable/buffered tablets or pediatric powder for oral solution (ddI, Videx, Videx Pediatric, and others). Before taking Avelox, tell your doctor if you have heart or liver disease, have ever had an allergic reaction to an antibiotic, use a diuretic medicine, have a low level of potassium in your blood (hypokalemia) or have epilepsy or another seizure disorder.
Avelox Side Effects
Avelox may also make your skin more sensitive to sunburn. Contact your doctor if you have severe redness, burning, rash, itching, or swelling after being in the sun. Avoid being exposed to tanning beds. Avelox/Moxifloxacin has been scheduled in FDA pregnancy category C, which means that it is not known whether this medicine will be harmful to an unborn baby. Avelox may pass into breast milk and could harm a nursing baby; it should not be used by any children younger than 18 years of age. Never take more than the prescribed dose. Symptoms of an Avelox overdose may include extreme sleepiness, vomiting, seizures, tremors or diarrhea.
