Lyrica Description - Why is Lyrica prescribed?
Lyrica is also available under the generic name Pregabalin and is is used to control seizures, mainly in Epileptic patients. Lyrica is also prescribed to treat fibromyalgia, as well as diabetic neuropathy (pain caused by nerve damage in people with diabetes) or post-herpetic neuralgia (herpes zoster). This powerful anti-epileptic drug is also called an anticonvulsant, which slows down impulses in the brain that can cause seizures. Lyrica also affects chemicals in the brain that transmit pain signals across the central nervous system.
Lyrica Indications
If you are taking Lyrica to prevent seizures, finish your prescribed dosage even if you feel fine. Some patients experience an increase in seizures if they stop taking Lyrica. Patients who have had congestive heart failure, diabetes or kidney disease should not take Lyrica without a doctor's expressed recommendation. Lyrica has also been categorized in FDA pregnancy category C, which means it may be harmful to an unborn baby, and shouldn't be taken by any child younger than 18 years old.
