Flagyl Description - Why is Flagyl prescribed?
Flagyl is an oral antiprotozoal and antibacterial also known by the generic name Metronidazole. Flagyl is used to treat certain infections caused by bacteria or amoebas. It destroys the bacteria from the inside by entering the bacterial cell. Flagyl works against bacteria but does not treat viral infections.
Flagyl Indications
Flagyl should not be used in the first 3 months of pregnancy, or if you drink alcohol, are taking busulfan, disulfiram or an HIV protease inhibitor that may contain alcohol such as an amprenavir solution. If you are unsure if the medicine contains alcohol, consult your doctor. Also, if you have a history of liver, nerve, brain, or blood problems or Crohn disease, contact your physician to make sure Flagyl is right for you. Some medicines may negatively interact with Flagyl, including (but not limited to) Barbiturates such as phenobarbital, anticoagulants such as warfarin, busulfan, lithium, Disulfiram and Oral contraceptives. Make sure you check with your health care provider before starting, stopping or changing doses of Flagyl.
Flagyl Side Effects
Flagyl side effects may include constipation, appetite loss, dizziness, metallic taste, nausea/upset stomach and/or vomiting. Though severe reactions are rare, they can include allergic reactions, bloody stools, changes in urination, numbness, tingling, or burning of the extremities, vaginal itching, odor, or discharge, sore throat, chills, or fever, stomach pain/cramps and white patches in and around the mouth.
